ECS Apprentice Engineers visit Hong Kong

As part of the engineering apprentices programme two of our engineers presented  their design project to the Institute of Vocational Training Hong Kong, which is UCLAN’s sister university. The trip included a visit to the Construction Innovation & Technology iHub to learn about the feasibility of low-carbon buildings in high-density cities with hot climates, focusing on green energy solutions. This provided a carbon efficient outlook when designing buildings as certain techniques are used in Hong Kong that are not normally used in the UK that could be beneficial when implemented into our designs at ECS. The visit also included a tour of the International Commerce Centre, the tallest building in Hong Kong, analysing the building services and plantroom. This visit gave an in depth look at how the large buildings in Hong Kong are cooled and some of the measures they must consider because of the buildings size and use. The engineers also visited the Hong Kong Jockey Club to see how sustainable energy technologies are applied. This visit showed the electrical resilience required to ensure 10 billion HKD worth of bets are processed every day. During these visits, they also attended presentations about how the International Commerce Centre manages building services systems across different types of buildings in Hong Kong.

Overall – It was a great learning experience!
